Doberman Pinschers were not evolved through centuries of natural selection. They are a product of the 20th century. The breed derived its name from Louis Dobermann of Apolda, Thuringia. This person was involved in the early development of the breed and after his death, the Germans named the breed in his honor. The breed is a result of a well-planned breeding program. The Doberman Pinscher breeders were more concerned with physical characteristics of the breed than with its appearance.

In the 19th century, the breeders' goal was development of a super dog that will be unsurpassed when protecting its family. The selection was focused on the strongest, toughest, bravest and the most loyal dogs. These dogs were first known as Dobermann's Dogs or Thuringia Pinschers. Their most distinctive features were aggressiveness and mistrust to strangers. They were fast learners. However, many breeders and specialists in the breed claim those dogs of that time were quite different from Doberman Pinschers of present day.

Otto Goeller is known to have played a significant role in development of the Doberman Pinscher breed. The German Kennel Club recognized the breed officially in 1899. It is a debatable point, what dogs were involved in the creation of the Doberman Pinscher. Black and Tan Manchester Terriers and Black English Greyhounds are documented as being used in order to improve the new breed's appearance. The old German Shepherd Dog and the German Pinscher are called ancestors of Doberman Pinschers.
